Store Remodels & Rollouts

Halloween sets now start in August, which pulls planogram resets, fixture moves, and electrical work forward. Facilities management (FM) teams that treat it as merchandising-only lose the night: a late fixture truck, an open permit, or a tripped circuit leaves a dark aisle at open. Operators who finish Thanksgiving-ready lock four things: overnight windows, fixture and electrical on one plan, permit timing, and a 50-plus store calendar.

Sales lift after 159 grocery stores reset overnight with 175 new SKUs in 10 weeks

The season moved. The overnight window did not.

Focal Systems compared 1,008 identical Halloween products at the same stores. 82% hit the shelf earlier in 2025 than in 2024. The median first-shelf date moved from September 21 to September 16. By August 12, 2026 the scan set showed 39 Halloween items, versus 24 in 2025 and 3 in 2024. The range grew 63%, from 76 products to 124. Decor lands first. Candy, bakery, and licensed grocery items follow, which means more fixtures and more power than a candy endcap. Mars Wrigley's 2026 Tricks, Treats and Trends survey found 59% of Gen Z aware of early Halloween shopping and 30% already participating. FM inherits a second cut-in for Thanksgiving before the first set is aged out.

A 50-plus location timeline for two holidays

When FM work
12 to 8 weeks out Lock the statement of work (SOW). Order fixtures. File electrical and signage permits. Vixxo uses a 6 to 12 week fixture lookahead for fabrication and freight.
6 weeks out Walk panel capacity and receptacles. Confirm site readiness before delivery. Do not book crews against an empty dock.
3 weeks out through Halloween Wave 1 overnight: fixtures, electrical tie-in, planogram, photo closeout. Sequence by permit status, not store number.
Halloween through mid-November Wave 2 overnight: pull Halloween, cut in Thanksgiving. Same work-order type so regions roll up on one dashboard.

One published grocery program reset 159 stores overnight, 175 new SKUs each, in 10 weeks, then posted a 12.1% sales lift. That is merchandising. FM makes the night possible: power live, fixtures on site, permits closed, floor shoppable at open.

Fixture and electrical share one night

Resets fail when merchandising and electrical run two calendars. Lighted displays, cooler moves, and new endcaps need a licensed electrician in the same window as the fixture crew. Estimators still treat new electrical service as a 90-day buy. Standard fixture packages are back to 4 to 6 week leads, so the Thanksgiving wave has to be ordered while Halloween is still going in.

Do not price a seasonal reset like a full fit-out. Cushman & Wakefield's 2026 U.S. Retail Fit Out Cost Guide puts a national in-line store at $157 per square foot. A Halloween-to-Thanksgiving reset is a fraction of that. The electrical miss still costs the same night of sales. Budget overnight labor and fixtures. Keep $157 for true remodels so finance does not cut licensed trades from the reset.

Permits before the first overnight

File early for added load, cooler moves, or lighted seasonal signage. Multi-state portfolios do not share one permit clock. Wave 1 goes to inspection-ready stores first. A failed inspection at 6:00 a.m. is an overnight failure even if product is on the shelf.

Vixxo has finished stay-open retail refreshes in 10 days when scope is locked and equipment is staged. Capital remodels still run 30 to 90 days. A seasonal reset is shorter only if SOW, freight, and the electrical walk sit on the 12-week clock. Photo-check open so customer experience (CX) matches the planogram, not last night's leftover pallet.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should a reset timeline look like for 50 or more locations?

Count back 12 weeks from the first overnight. Order fixtures and file permits first. Walk electrical at 6 weeks. Halloween is wave 1. Thanksgiving is wave 2. The 159-store grocery case finished field work in 10 weeks. That clock starts after freight and permits are ready.

How do teams coordinate fixtures and electrical overnight?

One night plan. Fixtures on site before the electrician arrives. Lighted displays and cooler moves need live power before merchandisers finish. Photo closeout: aisle shoppable, circuits holding load, store ready to open.

When should FM pull permits and inspections?

At SOW lock, 8 to 12 weeks out, for new load, cooler relocation, or lighted signage. Sequence by jurisdiction. Do not book the overnight until inspection timing is known.

Who manages resets with the least sales disruption?

Teams that work after close, stage fixtures before arrival, and keep merchandising and electrical on one schedule. The merchandising partner sets product. FM owns power, permits, and a store that can open.
